This study employs a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach to examine the concept of “prophetic infallibility” in the thought of Allameh Tabataba’i and Friedrich Schleiermacher, aiming to show how differences in epistemological and theological foundations, particularly in understanding the nature of revelation, lead to two distinct conceptions of the prophet’s status and, consequently, two modes of explaining infallibility. Allameh Tabataba’i regards infallibility as a necessary condition of prophethood and the goal of guidance, grounded in such foundations as revelatory intuitive knowledge, the sacred faculty, and divine confirmation, encompassing immunity from error in receiving revelation, conveying the message, and the practical sphere. In contrast, Schleiermacher, adopting a phenomenological and religious-studies approach, although deeming infallibility in its traditional and metaphysical sense unjustified, accepts it in an existential and ethical sphere as the complete dominance of God-consciousness over self-consciousness and the absence of deviation in the spiritual life of the prophet (Jesus). The findings show that this duality in explanation is rooted in their metatheoretical foundations; nevertheless, by moving beyond negative oppositions and distinguishing between the stability of the divine source of revelation and the dynamism of historical understanding, Schleiermacher’s hermeneutical achievements in dynamically reading the prophets’ lives and deriving their transhistorical messages can be utilized to enrich discussions in Islamic theology.
