The contemporary Muslim interpretive studies are being influenced by late Orientalist studies that are based on the achievements of the contemporary Western humanities and is formed in an analogy with modern Bible study methods thus must be aligned with the goals of the Holy Qur'an. Delving on modern methods of interpretation, this article shows that being satisfied with cosmic interpretation [afaqi, or interpretation of the horizons]- which is the final product of modern interpretation - does not correspond to the aim of the speaker of the Qur’an and the addressee of these words; spending the energy of the understander in historical and literary elements, and etc., this approach veils the divine manifestation through the lens of the Holy Word; reduces the Divine verses to literary expressions; reduces the Divine intention to the understanding of the contemporaries of the Qur'an; is inattentive to the fact that the Qur'an has some hidden meanings and the Qur’anic verses are of different categories and each category has its own interpretive requirements, and there are different levels of understandings and it is necessary to refer to the reliable sources of understanding; is incapable of the processes of thinking and adapting to cases and most importantly, of presenting an esoteric interpretation (ta’vil) and deprives the understander of the book from its mystical and faith benefits by limiting him/her to the surface of the text. Therefore, the new methods of interpreting the Holy texts can be useful for Qur’an believers in understanding the text, only when they are designed under the supervision of Muslim Qur'anic scholars, in the first place, so that the aims, role and position of this book are taken into account.
