چکیده

الکساندر راسل وب، مستشرق مسلمانِ آمریکایی است که علاوه‌بر مطالعات آکادمیک در باب اسلام، دل در گرو این آیین نیز داشت و در اثر همدلی‌هایی که با اسلام داشت، آثار او از رنگ و بوی خاصی برخوردار است. علاوه‌بر این، وب را باید نویسنده‌ای سرشناس و مبلغ اسلام در ایالات‌متحده آمریکا به‌شمار آورد که موفق شد با استفاده از نفوذ فرهنگی خود و هم‌زمان نفوذ سیاسی که به‌عنوان سفیر آمریکا در فیلیپین داشت، در رواج و پاگیری اسلام در ایالات‌متحده آمریکا و شتاب مطالعات اسلامی در این کشور، نقشی مهم ایفا کند. در این مقاله، پس از معرفی شخصیت علمی و فرهنگی وب، به بررسی آثار او در زمینه اسلام، تمدن اسلامی و جهان اسلام خواهیم پرداخت و کوشش خواهیم کرد نگاه همدلانه او را نسبت به اسلام ردیابی و بازنمایی کنیم.
