The article provides an overview of the genesis, typology and evolution of Tafsir in the Indian subcontinent from the 19th to the 21st century. It delves deeply into the approach, methodology and striking features of Abdul Majid Daryabadi's (1892-1977), Urdu Tafsir Majdi written in 1960s. Daryabadi's main contribution consists in his exposition of the Quranic worldview as endorsed by Ahl Al-Sunna wa Al- Jama'a , his refutation of the materialistic, Godless Western thought pattens and his comparison of the Quran with the Bible, bringing out the moral excellence and other hallmarks of the Quran. He also repudiates the Orientalist critique on the Quran. Unlike some apologist tafsir writers, he stoutly vindicates the Quranic miracles and eschatology. Tafsir Majidi stands out as a brilliant amalgam of tradition and modernity.
